Plav is located at the foot of the Prokletije mountain massif, 920 m above sea level, at the source of the river Lim. It is believed that it was named after the Roman emperor Flavius (Phlavius) at the time when this area was under the Romans, as evidenced by the very name of the river Lim, from the Roman Limes, which means border, or rather the river Lim represented the border between the eastern and western Roman Empire. . Part of the Prokletije National Park, the youngest national park in Montenegro, also belongs to Plav. Plav abounds in lakes, the most famous of which is Lake Plav, the largest glacial lake in the Balkans, one of the largest and most beautiful in this region. Hridsko and Visitorsko are mountain lakes, the so-called Gorske oči, and Visitorsko is specific in that it has a floating island.
The cultural and historical heritage of Plav is diverse. The old mosque from 1471, the monastery of St. Trojice in Brezojevica from the 13th century, Redžepagića tower from 1671 and Sultanija mosque built in 1907 are only part of the rich cultural treasure of our city.
